Hello from the Summer 2016 #VanguardSTEM interns!

Hello from the Summer 2016 #VanguardSTEM interns!

We are very excited to be working with #VanguardSTEM to bring you great content and updates throughout the summer! While we each have our more formal biographies here, we wanted to share a bit more about our interests and what you can expect from each of us over the summer. We hope to bring a sense of community to you as we grow the #VanguardSTEM brand!

This summer I will be acting as the social media coordinator for #VanguardSTEM. What does that mean, you ask? One word: Engage! Specifically, I will be working on expanding #VanguardSTEM presence on popular social media platforms such as Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, Tumb1r, and Snapchat. The focus of my internship is to promote the main goal of #VanguardSTEM itself: conversations between women of color in STEM. In fact, this goal was the main reason I wanted to be a #VanguardSTEM intern this summer. One of my long-term goals is advocacy for minorities in STEM, and creating a community of women of color in STEM online really resonated with me. I have personally benefited from the episodes and conversations, and that made me want to be a part of the movement and share this “goodness” with other minorities in STEM. When I am not hard at work I collect vinyls. Right now I only own an electric portable record player, but one day I hope to invest in a nice wooden vinyl player. That would be epic!

I am honored to serve as the #VanguardSTEM talent engagement intern. I will focus on organizing and maintaining information about potential panelists for the show. I will also be identifying and reaching out to potential panelists, and assisting them in preparation for their appearance on the show. This is very important to me as #VanguardSTEM and Dr. Jedidah Isler have both been a huge source of inspiration and support for me. I have been encouraged by all of the women’s stories from #VanguardSTEM, and I wanted to become an intern to help increase awareness of the show, as well as impact the lives of more women of color in STEM. In addition to helping women of color in STEM, I also know American Sign Language, and am passionate about the needs of the deaf community.

This summer I will be one of the writers for the #VanguardSTEM website. I will be interviewing different women over the course of the summer, and will write about their stories and perspectives on issues that women of color in STEM face. This is actually one of the main reasons I wanted to intern at #VanguardSTEM. I have only recently started working through my own issues based on my identity, which made me realize how important it is to have a support group. I want to be a part of #VanguardSTEM because I want to help bring this issue to light, and create a community of support and encouragement among all women of color in STEM. In my free time I love playing, learning, and creating music. I collect vinyls, own two trombones, and play trombone and sing in a alternative pop band. I am always looking for new bands and concerts to attend, so if you have suggestions let me know!

I will be a writer and contributor for #VanguardSTEM this summer. My writing will highlight and dissect various topics that involve women of color (WOC) in the STEM community. I wanted to intern at #VanguardSTEM in order to find my own voice as a WOC in STEM, and use it to shed light on stores and experiences that are not in the forefront of the media. I love to bake in my free time. I am a self-taught baker and I can make everything from scratch, but my specialty is cheesecake!

  1. I can’t wait to see the awesome work that will come from these interns, and the increased profile of Vangaurd STEM on social media. I would also like to suggest posting the twitter and other social media handles for these interns if I can follow them directly.
    You all are inspiring!
